Start that bottle of Windex and start cleaning your space helmet visor. Space tourism is almost upon us … Got a cool million stashed around your house. If not, start saving that loose change in your seat cushions. By 2016, you can be the first one on your block to boast you took a five-day stay on board an orbiting hotel built by Russian company Orbital Technologies. Yes folks, space tourism is almost upon us. It was only a matter of time. About five years from now, that is.
You’ll get there via a Russian Soyuz rocket, taking you about a day to reach the Commercial Space Station 217 miles above the earth. Once you catch up to the orbiting abode, you’ll settle in with your comrades — up to six other space tourists (or researchers) — for an unparalleled adventure, residing in four cabins aboard the space station.
While you’re traveling at 17,500 miles per hour in low earth orbit, you’ll be pampered with all the spacely amenities you can imagine, such as plenty of gourmet foods, a specially designed sealed shower, your choice of a vertical or horizontal bed (does it really matter in the microgravity of space?), and you might even get to sip some Tang spiked with your favorite vodka (okay, we made that last one up — unfortunately, alcohol will not be available).
Perhaps the best feature of the Commercial Space Station will be its large portholes, which will probably occupy most of your time as you gaze out into the cosmos and down at the earth below.
By the way, there are at least nine other private sector companies planning their own spacecations (hey, I just made that up) in the near future.
And I'm working on my Blogger problem. Some can leave comments, others cannot. If you'd like to leave a comment but are unable to, please email it to me at golionssss@yahoo.com and I'll post it for you. Thanks!!!
Question: Would you take a Spacecation, even if you could afford it? Looks kinda cramped up there with six people.

I think I'll wait another 100 years. The accomodations should be better by then...probably the food too.
First, the con. This practically reeks of commercialism ready to head into orbit. There's profit apparently to be had even in space. So that's one thing going against it.
On the plus side, having a hotel in space is a sign of the times. I'm glad we're extending ourselves beyond just the one planet. Our species is likelier to survive longer by doing so.
Cool, maybe they'll improve the motion-sickness meds by then so I can add it to the bucket list.
part of me leaps at it!

Hi Stephen .. I'd don't fancy being cooped up for a day .. or the risk factor! But it's wonderful some do .. and we have fantastic photos for us to look at - as Laura says .. in my next life!
Cheers Hilary
PS re commenting problem - try using the pop up comment box and see if that helps the problem: it seems to ... (not full page as this is)
It looks a bit crampt to me ... for a million dollars I want my own space. Anf thans Hilary, I'll do just that.

Oh wow!! Quick, trademark and copyright your "spacecations" word - it's fab!!!!! Take care

I've seen a pic of this before. Is this for real?...let me dig deep to put out the millions. I'll say it again, it sucks that we've done away with the space program...hmm, a quick alien invasion and we're back in. :)
I don't mind flying at 35,000 feet but any thing beyond would be a no go.
One of my followers had problems with comments, I sent her a comment and as she was reading it itwas taken off by blog admin, why I don't know there was nothing untoward written.
Yvonne.
That sounds totally awesome! I would go for sure! I don't really care WHAT its like... to see the Earth from space would be like a dream come true!
I just don't think it's something that would interest me, personally. My first aspiration as a young girl was to be an astronaut-- I so admired Sally Ride-- but something like this just doesn't compute for me, personally.
Great post, though, Stephen.
mooderino, this is where wormholes would come in handy.
Kitty, I'll call my team of Ivy League attorneys this morning!
Laila, I agree it sucks they mothballed the Space Shuttle Program. So many good paying jobs were generated and one of the few decent returns on our hard earned tax dollars.
Yvonne, Blogger sure is quirky. I hope customer support can help me.
Jess, very cool! I'd love to do it too.
If I had the money for that little adventure, I'd do it.
I've not had a problem commenting and your sidebars seem to be back in place.
I hate flying, so a cruise into space is out of the question.
I wouldn't go on the first trip, but I'd want to go.
Gourmet food on a Russian spaceship? Gourmet Borscht? I don't have enough cushions to pluck out $1,000,000.00, so I don't have to worry about it.
If I had a million I'd rather visit the USA, Europe and South America.
The thought of spending time in a hotel surrounded by NO air, doesn't really appeal to me. But, to those interested, I say go for it.
I think I'd get claustrophobic, but I'd admire anyone who wanted to give it a try!
Suze, I did a log on Dr. Sally Rider not too long ago. A truly amazing pioneer for women.
Doralynn, me too! Maybe we'll see each other up there someday.
Alex, strange. Some people can see them and some cannot. I cannot on both my PC and iMac. I'll have to try my blog at the local library on their PCs.
Diane, that's good thinking.
Anthony, good point. Just think of all the places you could go here on earth for the same price.
Clarissa, what if the space hotel sprouted an air leak. How long can you hold your brath for?
Here's a comment from Carol Kilgore she eamiled to me:
Starving writers need not apply.
Happy Weekend!
Hope you get your Blogger problems fixed soon. I’ve had my share, and they’re no fun.

I'll take Jamaica anyday!!
It would be cool to see and experience, but I might be too claustrophic, acrophobic, and all around phobic for space travel. But, my son Eric, who wants to be an astronaut, will be first in line

Id like to invite you folks to come to Amish Stories for a recipe for "Famous Pennsylvania Dutch Sticky Cinnamon Buns" along with a book signing schedule for Amish fiction writer Wanda Brunstetter for Pennsylvania and Ohio as well as a contest to meet her. I hope everyone so far is having a great weekend. Thanks everyone. Richard from Amish Stories.
I couldn't leave a comment through Safari, but I can through Firefox.
I'm not interested in space travel, especially with the high cost. For now, I hope to attend a wedding in New Orleans and buy a house.
Pretty insightful. Thanks!

This sounds exciting. I am looking forward to the day when people will be able to afford space vacations like this one. It would be amazing to stay in one of these space hotels even for a week.
