Star Trek As We Know It Blogfest

I thought I would do something a bit different for Ellie Garrett's Star Trek As We Know It Blogfest and spotlight my favorite characters in roles apart from their Star Trek personas. Enjoy!

William Shatner (Captain Kirk) – Twilight Zone Episode “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” originally aired 1963.

A man, newly recovered from a nervous breakdown, becomes convinced that a monster only he sees is damaging the plane he's flying in.

Quote from Shatner: “There’s … something on the wing … some … thing.”

Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock)Nimoy was the villain, and a very good one, in the Columbo episode “A Stitch In Time,” originally aired February 11, 1973.

Dr. Barry Mayfield is a highly successful and respected surgeon, but his methods leave a lot to be desired. A fellow nurse becomes suspicious about his procedures in sewing up internal organs after 'successful' operations. The good doctor kills her before she spills the beans, but Mayfield doesn't count on detective Columbo investigative skills which quickly uncovers a trail of murderous events

Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) – The Simpsons episode Homer The Great, originally aired 1995

Homer becomes a member of a mysterious organization called the Stonecutters and is heralded as "the chosen one." Stewart did the voice for Number 1, the leader of the Stonecutters who

Quote from Stewart: “Welcome to the club, Number 493. You have become a member of the ancient and noble society of Stonecutters, who since ancient times have always endeavored to shatter the stone of ignorance, to bring forth the light of truth... now, let's all get drunk and play Ping-Pong!”

George Takei – (Hikaru Sulu)
In January 2007, Takei began appearing on Heroes, as a successful business man and also the father of one of the main characters Hiro Nakamura, who also happens to be an obsessive fan of Star Trek. In the first episode Takei is portrayed, the license plate of the limo he arrives in is NCC-1701, another reference to the Star Trek series. He has appeared in seasons one, two, three and four.

Zachary Quinto (Mr. Spock) – Star Trek (2009)
Another Star Trek / Heroes connection. Quinto played the role of Sylar, (which he adopted from the name on his watch) is a former timepiece restorer who always desired to be special instead of "ordinary". He was a villain’s villain who studied his victim's brains using his intuitive aptitude in order to gain their supernatural powers and continue to become more powerful and more evil.

And I'm working on my Blogger problem. Some can leave comments, others cannot. If you'd like to leave a comment but are unable to, please email it to me at golionssss@yahoo.com and I'll post it for you. Thanks!!!

I can see your sidebar stuff and I love the Shatner quote. :) :)

Did Sylar eat the brains? i thought he just had a look at how they worked. (I'd also like to point out that my being pedantic is in keeping with the spirit of sci-fi).

I can see your sidebar stuff but on the left side there are huge gaps between books, especially right under yours at the top.
I loved that Twilight episode and never realized it was Shatner. I've never seen the other TV shows.

Just looked again and now the gaps are gone. I saw your synopsis for a brief second, then it disappeared, leaving a gap!

Wonderful post for the blogfest. I used to watch it many years ago on TV. My late husband was an avid fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, brings back the memories.

Getting a jump on the blogfest I see! Clever way to do it. And I've seen all of those.
Everything looks in the right place to me, Stephen.

You can NEVER go wrong with Star Trek! Love it! :-)

I cannot see your sidebar stuff.

Stephen Tremp said...

Well, I guess the sidebars are partially fixed. I'll have to let Blogger know they have more work to do. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

interesting take on the blogfest! And I can definitely see stuff on your sidebars :)

I think this is a great twist on a blogfest. Loved reading all of them!

Hey Stephen,

I just wanted to leave you some comments, but couldn't get it to work.

Star Trek:

Captain Kirk is my favorite too. I love watching him in other movies, but I can't help but thinking of him as the Captain. I love the emphasis he puts on certain words. Nobody else can speak quite like that.

Space Vacation:

I would love to go up there and see the Earth from a new perspective, but I'm not sure I could control my claustrophobia.

Great post I like seeing the actors playing different characters. Some of them I've seen, others not. Zachary Quinto has amazing eyes and eyebrows! :O)

Great take on it, fantastic list. My favorite role for Patrick Stewart is a toss up between Captain Ahab and Scrooge. Depends on what season it is I guess. As to your blog, when I few the entire thing I can't make click on anything, but can see everything when each entry is a one page.

Nicely done. I love seeing the characters playing other parts. And heroes was an awesome series. :)

Patrick Stewart was also King Richard in Costner's Robin Hood. So love his voice!

Its fun to see actors and actresses play other roles outside of their more famous characters, especially bit roles before they were famous. Voices for cartoons and computer animations are always popular with actors too. Shatner also did Ozzie the possum in Over The Hedge.

Sidebars are coming through fine for me.

My favorite Patrick Stewart role (outside of Picard) is probably Scrooge. But I got to see him on Broadway in The Ride Down Mt. Morgan - can't remember the character's name - and he was awesome.

Cool take on the blogfest! Nimoy's done so much outside of Trek; he's the man.

Thanks for the healing wishes, Stephen. Think they helped - today is muuuuuch better than yesterday, thankfully. Even out walking a bit.

I wish I knew jack about Star Trek *sighs* - but the name 'Picard' (in parenthesis in your blog) is a family name on my grandmother's side - hey, any 'cousin' in the storm.

Stephen Tremp said...

Hi Stephen,

Tried to leave a comment but was unable to. So here it is:

Thanks for the info! I think among all of them, Picard is my favorite, although I am hardly an expert.
Have only seen a handful of episodes. :)

Looks like maybe I can leave a comment now ... I hope. I tried last week, but couldn't.

Star Trek ... I miss it.

*Hey, I got through!*

Love your unique post for the Blogfest.
Super!!

I did knock, um, early this morning, couldn't comment. But the web/blogger blockage is fixed now. At least for me.
Great Blog!

Seems like its hit or miss. Sometimes some bloggers can comment and sometimes they can't. Makes it more frustrating trying to nail down exatly what the problem is.

I remember that Twilight Zone episode, but I think it was remade and made into the Twilight zone movie... But creepy!
I've never seen a full Star Trek, but I can see why it's popular with many!

Very cool list. I applaud your taking the blogfest in a new and original direction.
Thanks for posting.

Seriously Stephen; I would have been disappointed if you did not participate in this blogfest. You have such an amazing SciFi voice.

These were awesome tributes to the actors. But Dude; did you have to use the Simpsons for Patrick Stewart? With so many wonderful acting credits to his name? OMG! You are not forgiven (lol).

Diversity is the stuff of the universe; right?

Interesting post. I've seen the Twiglight Zone episode, with Shatner, several times.

I liked Stewart in the movie Scrooge. We watch it every year at Christmas.

That was fun reading about other roles those stars played. Funny line quote from Shatner.

Patrick Stewart (Picard) did have a lot of other roles both on TV and theatre. He is hugely popular with a lot of people. I thought it would be fun to spotlight his role on the Simpsons.

Also, Leonard Nimoy had a role on a Simpson's episode too. I thought of that, but since Columbo is my all-time favorite TV show, I had to go with that.

I got the grey-out, but was able to comment by looking for the link in your source code and following it manually. Being a geek is useful sometimes!

So - great list. I haven't seen your other appearances for Kirk or Spock, but Heroes was pretty good back in season 1, and I loved Patrick Stewart's role on the Simpsons. He was also amazing as Professor X!

Thanks for warping around the Federation with us.
